Areas We Service
A safety switch, technically called a Residual Current Device or RCD, is one of the most important safety devices in any home or business. It continuously monitors the flow of electricity through your circuits and cuts the power in as little as 30 milliseconds if it detects current leakage, the kind that occurs when a person contacts a live conductor. That’s fast enough to prevent a fatal electric shock in most cases. AdVoltage Electrical installs, tests, and upgrades safety switches for homes and businesses across Brisbane.
What Is a Safety Switch and How Does It Work?
Electricity normally flows in a balanced loop, out through the active conductor and back through the neutral. A safety switch measures this balance continuously. If it detects any difference between the outgoing and returning current, even as little as 30 milliamps, it concludes that current is leaking somewhere it shouldn’t be. That could be through a faulty appliance, damaged wiring insulation, or a person who has come into contact with a live conductor. Within milliseconds, the safety switch disconnects the circuit.Safety Switch vs Circuit Breaker: What’s the Difference?
This is one of the most commonly misunderstood aspects of home electrical safety. Many people assume that having circuit breakers means they are protected against electrocution. They are not.- A circuit breaker protects your wiring and property from overload and short circuits. It activates when current on the circuit exceeds the breaker’s rated capacity.
- A safety switch (RCD) protects people from electrocution by detecting current leakage to earth, including through a human body.
Queensland Safety Switch Requirements
Under the Electrical Safety Regulation 2013, Queensland has mandatory safety switch requirements:- All new switchboards and upgraded switchboards must have RCD protection on all circuits
- Rental properties are required to have safety switches installed on all power circuits
- New wiring for any purpose must include RCD protection
Queensland workplace health and safety legislation also requires RCD protection for portable electrical equipment used in certain workplaces. If you run a business from commercial or industrial premises, your portable tools and equipment may need to be plugged into RCD-protected outlets.
Types of Safety Switches We Install
Switchboard-Mounted RCDs
The most comprehensive and reliable form of protection. Installed in your switchboard, these protect an entire circuit or group of circuits. Modern switchboards use combined MCB/RCD units (RCBOs) that provide both circuit breaker and RCD protection in a single device, allowing each circuit to be individually protected, so a fault on one circuit doesn’t cut power to everything else.Portable Plug-In RCDs
Plug-in RCDs plug into a standard power point and provide RCD protection for anything connected to them. Useful for temporary situations such as construction sites, outdoor work, or using electrical equipment in areas not yet protected by a switchboard RCD. Not a substitute for a permanently installed switchboard RCD.How Much Does Safety Switch Installation Cost in Brisbane?
The cost of safety switch installation depends mainly on the condition of your existing switchboard and how many circuits need to be protected. As a guide for Brisbane homes:- Adding a single safety switch to a switchboard with spare capacity is the most affordable option. Suitable when your switchboard is reasonably modern, has space for the new device, and just needs RCD protection added to a previously unprotected circuit.
- Replacing standard circuit breakers with RCBOs (combined breaker and safety switch) across multiple circuits gives you individual circuit protection, which is the modern best-practice setup. Priced according to the number of circuits involved.
- Adding safety switches as part of a full switchboard upgrade is often the most cost-effective option for older boards, because the bulk of the labour is shared. If your switchboard has ceramic fuses or is full, combining the work usually saves money compared to doing each job separately.
- Rental property compliance installations typically include the certificate of test documentation property managers and landlords need to demonstrate compliance.
If your switchboard is older or already at capacity, a partial or full switchboard upgrade may make more sense than retrofitting safety switches alone. We’ll let you know upfront so you can make an informed decision.
Safety Switch and RCD Testing Brisbane
Safety switches are also known as RCDs (residual current devices), and RCD testing is how you know they will actually trip when they need to. We carry out RCD testing for homes, rental properties, strata buildings and workplaces across Brisbane, and provide a written record of the results.
A safety switch is only useful if it actually works. RCDs do fail over time, particularly older units installed in the 1990s and early 2000s, and a failed safety switch provides no protection at all. There are two distinct types of testing:Push-Button Testing (DIY)
Every safety switch has a test button marked ‘T’ or ‘TEST’. Pressing this button simulates a fault and the switch should trip immediately. Householders should do this every six months. It takes 30 seconds and confirms the switch’s basic mechanical operation. If the switch doesn’t trip when you press the test button, the RCD has failed and needs to be replaced.Professional Compliance Testing
Push-button testing confirms the switch responds, but it doesn’t verify the trip time or trip current meet Australian Standards. Professional RCD testing uses calibrated equipment to measure exactly how quickly the switch trips and at what current level. This is required for:- Rental property compliance certification
- Pre-purchase electrical inspections
- Workplace health and safety compliance for businesses
- Periodic compliance testing for commercial premises
- Verifying older safety switches still meet current standards
How to Test Your Safety Switch at Home
Every safety switch has a test button, usually marked ‘T’ or ‘TEST’. Press it every six months to confirm the switch is operating. When pressed, it should immediately trip and cut power to the protected circuit. Reset by switching the RCD back to ‘on’. If pressing the test button does not trip the switch, the RCD has failed and needs to be replaced. Testing takes 30 seconds, so add it to your calendar twice a year.Signs Your Safety Switches May Need Attention
- Your switchboard has circuit breakers but no RCDs, identifiable by the absence of test buttons on any device in your switchboard
- Your safety switch trips randomly without an obvious cause
- Your safety switch fails the test, meaning pressing the test button does not trip the switch
- You have recently added circuits, appliances, or undergone renovation work without the switchboard being updated
- Your safety switches are over 15 to 20 years old and have never been professionally tested
Safety Switches for Rental Properties and Property Managers
Queensland landlords are legally required to have safety switches installed on all power circuits in residential rental properties. Before entering into a new tenancy agreement or renewing an existing one, the landlord must ensure the required safety switches are installed and functional. The penalties for non-compliance are significant, and an injury to a tenant in a property without compliant RCD protection has obvious legal and insurance consequences. We assist property owners and managers across Brisbane with safety switch installation and certification, providing the documentation needed to demonstrate compliance. For property managers handling multiple properties, we offer streamlined scheduling and direct invoicing arrangements. See our strata and real estate electrical services page for more on how we work with property managers.Servicing Brisbane’s Bayside, Southside, and Northside Suburbs

How much does safety switch installation cost in Brisbane?
The cost depends on your switchboard type and how many circuits need protection. Adding a single safety switch to a switchboard with spare capacity is a modest job. Replacing multiple breakers with RCBOs across the whole board costs more but gives you individual circuit protection. If your switchboard is full or outdated, it usually makes sense to combine the work with a switchboard upgrade for better value. We assess your switchboard and give you a clear, fixed quote before starting any work.
How do I know if I have a safety switch?
Open your switchboard. Safety switches (RCDs) are identifiable by a small test button on the face of the device, usually marked ‘T’ or ‘TEST’. If none of the devices in your switchboard have test buttons, you likely have circuit breakers only and no safety switches. Call us to assess your installation.
Why does my safety switch keep tripping?
A safety switch that trips frequently, particularly when a specific appliance is in use, has detected a current leakage. Start by unplugging all appliances on the affected circuit and resetting. If it holds, plug appliances back in one at a time to identify which one is causing the trip. Retire or repair the faulty appliance. If the switch trips with nothing plugged in, you may have a wiring fault that needs professional diagnosis.
Is one safety switch enough for my whole house?
A single safety switch protecting all circuits was once the standard, but it has a significant drawback. If the switch trips, you lose power to your entire home, including the lights, which is a safety issue at night. Modern best practice is to install individual RCBOs on each circuit so a fault on one circuit only cuts that circuit. We can upgrade your switchboard to provide this level of protection.
How often should safety switches be tested?
Press the test button on each RCD every six months to confirm it trips. For rental properties and commercial premises, professional compliance testing with calibrated equipment is recommended every one to two years, or in line with workplace health and safety obligations. We provide documented compliance testing across Brisbane.
Is safety switch installation compulsory for landlords?
Yes. Queensland legislation requires safety switches on all power circuits in residential rental properties. Landlords are responsible for ensuring compliance before a tenancy begins or is renewed. Penalties apply for non-compliance, and the legal and insurance consequences of an incident in a non-compliant rental are significant. We provide installation and certification across Brisbane.
Does a safety switch protect against lightning or power surges?
No. Safety switches protect against current leakage to earth. They do not protect against voltage surges from lightning or switching events on the network. For surge protection, you need a Surge Protection Device (SPD) installed at your switchboard. We can install surge protection alongside safety switch upgrades if you’d like both done in one visit.
